Active Shooter emergency preparedness

I gave this speech to a Group of Staten Island Business people months before the massacre at "Pulse" in Orlando. Please open the hyperlink and view my video. This essential training emphasizes proactive strategies to mitigate risk and increase the chances of survival during a critical incident. Effective preparation is vital for everyone's safety in uncertain times. All Florida Investigations wants you to be safe!

Some topics covered in the speech:

Situational Awareness:

  • Exits: Actively observe your surroundings to locate all exits (e.g., sitting with your back to the wall).

  • Action Plan (Run, Hide, Fight):

    1. Run (Flee): Determine the threat's location and run away quickly toward the nearest exit.

    2. Hide: If escape is impossible, hide. Hiding is not ideal. Use Cover (stops bullets, e.g., engine block) over Concealment (hides visibility but is penetrable, e.g., curtain).

    3. Fight: The absolute last resort. Use "weapons of opportunity" (e.g., chair, fire extinguisher) with speed and force to disorient the assailant.

Additional Considerations:

  • Circumstance: Response depends on the situation (e.g., number of assailants). Use knowledge of weapons (e.g., a revolver holding 5-6 rounds) to maintain vigilance, knowing an attacker may be reloading after six shots.

  • Post-Escape: If you escape and others are trapped, immediately call 911. Provide exact location, nearest entrance (with landmarks), and gather intelligence (video/audio from a safe, covered position) on shooters/descriptions for police.

  • Physiological Response: Control the fight-or-flight response and resulting tunnel vision to achieve the best outcome.
